Today’s card has some big names and some big favorites, which is usually where the public money starts piling in. France, Argentina, Norway, Austria, Mbappé, Messi, Haaland - those are the easy bets to talk yourself into. The problem is that the books know that too, and a lot of those prices are already inflated.
So for today, I am mostly looking in the other direction. Not necessarily fading the favorites to lose, but fading the idea that every one of these games has to turn into a comfortable, high-scoring highlight reel.
Austria vs. Jordan - Under 2.5 Goals
Austria-Jordan Under 2.5 Goals (+104 at FanDuel)
This is my favorite bet of the day.
Austria are clearly the better team, but this line feels too heavily tilted toward the idea that they will simply overwhelm Jordan from the opening whistle. That may happen, but I do not think it is the most likely version of this game. Jordan are making their World Cup debut, and teams in that position are usually not interested in turning the game into a track meet. Their best path is to stay compact, keep the game close, and try to steal moments on the counter or from set pieces.
Austria should control the ball and territory, but that does not automatically mean goals come easily. They are a good, well-drilled team, not some all-out attacking machine that needs to win 4-1. If Jordan can survive the first half hour, this can quickly become the kind of tense opener where Austria are pushing, Jordan are defending for their lives, and every missed chance makes the game tighter.
This feels much more like a 1-0 or 2-0 type game than the market suggests.
Argentina vs. Algeria - Under 2.5 Goals
Argentina-Algeria Under 2.5 Goals (-110 at Bet365)
The second bet is another under, this time in Argentina against Algeria.
Argentina are the defending champions and the better team in almost every area. But that does not mean they need to blow the doors off Algeria in the opener. If anything, this feels like the kind of game Argentina will be perfectly happy to control. They know better than anyone what can happen in a World Cup opener if you get loose, impatient, or careless.
Algeria are good enough and organized enough to make this annoying. They are not going to want to trade chances with Argentina. Their best chance is to slow the game down, stay connected defensively, and force Argentina to break them down over and over again.
That gives us a pretty clear script. Argentina should have more of the ball, more of the chances, and probably win the game, but a controlled 1-0 or 2-0 makes more sense than a wide-open shootout. The public will naturally gravitate toward Argentina goals and margin. I would rather play the game script where Argentina win professionally without needing fireworks.
Senegal +1.5 vs. France
Senegal +1.5 (-155 at DraftKings)
The third bet is Senegal +1.5 against France.
France are one of the most talented teams in the tournament, and they are absolutely capable of beating anyone on the board. But this is not a bet against France as much as it is a bet on Senegal being undervalued. Senegal are athletic, experienced, organized, and dangerous enough in transition that they should not be priced like a typical overmatched underdog.
The public side is easy to understand. France have Mbappé, a loaded roster, and the name recognition that will always attract money. But Senegal have the kind of profile that can keep this close. They can defend in numbers, match physicality, and still threaten enough going forward to prevent France from completely camping in their half.
With +1.5, we do not need Senegal to pull the upset. We just need them to avoid losing by multiple goals. In a World Cup opener between two talented teams, that is a lot of cushion. France may still win, but I think this is more likely to be a tight, competitive game than a comfortable French stroll.
For anyone looking at Asian lines, Senegal +1.25 at -125 is also playable.
